Everything You Need to Know to Train Your Dog

Everything You Need to Know to Train Your Dog

If you want your dog to be obedient when he grows up, teaching him from an early age is the best way. In fact, it is not difficult to train a dog. When your dog does the right thing, reward him, then he will has the motivation to do the right thing. There are mainly 7 points to trainning your puppy.

1. Don't Raise A Dog on Impulse

Choose the type of dog according to your actual situation. Never pick a dog that needs a lot of exercises just because you want to force yourself into a healthy life. If you can't keep taking your dog for exercise, both you and he will have a hard time.
Make a note of the habits and basic conditions of the dog you want to raise. Then evaluate which dog breed is right for you. If you're getting a dog that will make a drastic change in your lifestyle, it's better to choose another breed.

2. Teach Your Dog HisName

In order to easily teach your dog to remember his name, you should find a clear name for him, usually no more than two syllables. This will allow your dog to recognize his name from your words and focus during training.
Call his name whenever you need to get his attention as often as possible. If he stops and looks at you, that means he remembers his name. When he responds to his name, you should actively encourage or reward him so that he will continue to answer to his name.

3. Find out your puppy’s favorite food

To motivate a puppy to do one thing, food is the easiest and most convenient lure and reward. But food also has different degrees of love in the dog's heart. For example, some dogs will not guard the dog food, but will guard the bones. That means the bones are at a higher position than dog food in their mind!
So find out your puppy's favorite food, whether it's dog food, chicken jerky, molar sticks, or bones. And then sort them by level of preference. Usually, common foods are used for daily training rewards, favorite foods are used for training such as "refusing dog food from strangers" and "emergency recall". If your puppy are youger than 3 months old, use dog food for training is a better choice.

4. Positive Reinforcement to Reward Your Dog

Reward your puppy every time they do something right or carry out an appropriate behavior on their own. After training for a period of time, you can exchange some of the snack rewards for compliments and touches. Of course, don't always reward snacks. Unpredictable snack rewards, such as rewarding your puppy after completing instructions correctly, will make him look forward to the next training.

5. Don't Blame Your Dog When He Does Something Wrong

If your dog does the right thing, reward him immediately. But what if he does something wrong? Some people may think it's a good idea to hitting or beat the dog. But many biting dogs are also beaten, and hitting a dog can easily make him lose his trust in his owner. For novice owners, the easier way is to ignore your dog's misbehavior. And then guide him to do the right thing next time. Don't make the wrong reaction when you're angry because it may easily mislead your dog.

6. Be Mentally Prepared

When training your dog, please keep a calm and rational attitude. Because the restlessness or excitement you show can affect the effectiveness of your training. Remember that the purpose of training a dog is to reinforce good habits. Therefore, when raising a well-trained dog, you need to have a certain amount of determination and belief.

7. Prepare Dog Training Equipment

A leather cord with a collar or harness (about two meters long) is entry-level gear. You can also consult a professional dog trainer to find what equipment is right for your dog. Puppies don't need much, but older dogs may need a leash like a collar to focus for a while.
Training isn't always smooth sailing, so don't get discouraged in the face of setbacks, and don't blame your dog. Encourage them regularly to increase their confidence and ability to learn. If your mood is relatively stable, the dog's mood will also be stable.

However, if you are more emotional, your dog will be afraid of you. He will become wary and stop trusting you. Therefore, it is difficult for him to learn new things again. If you have a difficult problem with dog training, the best way is to seek professional dog training courses and teacher help.
